Additional World Pool dates in 2023

23 April 2023

World Pool is now in its fifth year, having started at Royal Ascot in 2019. World Pool is a collaboration of 28 pool betting operators from around the globe. During a World Pool event certain pools operated by the UK Tote, and other Totes from around the globe, are notionally commingled with pools operated by the Hong Kong Jockey Club to create a “World Pool”.  This results in enormous liquidity, and a multi-million pound betting experience and better value for the customer. World Pool is proving increasingly popular with horseracing fans and is generating new funds and significant financial returns for British and Irish racing via media rights for participating racecourses which is in turn being put into prizemoney increases.

World Pool supporting British and Irish racing

Not only does World Pool help further internationalise the sport and shine the global spotlight on participating racecourses, it also generates vital betting revenue and increased media rights for the sport, in the region of £500,000 - £800,000 a day.[2] World Pool is a key part of the future sustainable funding of the sport.

Betting into World Pool

World Pool is accessed via the UK Tote. Bets can be placed on World Pool events at the racecourse, online at tote.co.uk – or tote.ie for Irish customers - as well as at the Tote App or via bookmakers, the majority of whom accept Tote bets online and in shops.

There is incredible value to be found in World Pool given the size of the pools created and the diversity of views from racing fans all over the globe: For example:

  • The tote.co.uk Win price beat the Starting Price in 25 of the 35 races at Royal Ascot in 2022 (and was matched on the remaining 10 via its Tote Guarantee)
  • If you placed a £10 bet on all winners across the 17 World Pool days with Tote+ in 2022 it would have generated £2,333 more with the Tote than placing those bets at Industry SP
  • The Tote’s typical overround online on a World Pool day is c.106%, versus c.115-130% with bookmakers, and due to the Tote’s pool betting business model, as opposed to a bookmaker, it can welcome winning customers and never restricts customers for winning
  • With diverse opinions, and horses and jockeys from around the world competing, there are always interesting betting angles and odds to be found on World Pool days

The seven bet types in World Pool are:

  • Win (Single Leg bet) – Pick the winner of the race
  • Place (Single Leg bet) – Pick a horse to be placed. Hong Kong place terms apply
  • Exacta (Single Leg bet) – Pick the first two horses in the correct order
  • Trifecta (Single Leg bet) – Also known as the Tierce. Select the winner, the second, and the third horse in the correct order
  • Quinella (Single Leg bet) – Select the first two finishers in either order
  • Swinger (Single Leg bet) – Also known as the Quinella Place, pick two horses to finish first, second or third in any order
  • Treble (Multi Leg bet) – Pick the first horse in the last three races

The place terms for World Pool for all races are determined by the number of declared runners and are as follows:

  • 1-4 declared runners: no place pool
  • 5 or 6 declared runners: 1st and 2nd. Void if less than 4 actual runners
  • 7 to 20 declared runners: 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 3 places remain for 5 or 6 actual runners. Void if less than 5 actual runners.
  • 21 or more declared runners: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 4 places remain for 20 or less actual runners
